Mission

@payitnomind is an online activist project spreading awareness about trans* pioneer and legend, Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson.

Marsha P. is an African-American trans woman who spent her life fighting for queer liberation and protecting the homeless trans* and gender non-conforming community around downtown Manhattan. Marsha was a social justice activist, artist, sex worker, and prominent figure around the 1969 Stonewall riots.

Marsha was known to be full of life with an infectious personality. The story goes that when a judge asked Johnson what the “P.” in her name stood for, Johnson snapped her finger and said "pay it no mind". Humored by the response, the judge agreed and let her go. Johnson would also use the saying sarcastically when questioned about her gender.

@payitnomind sells "Pay It No Mind" hats (Marsha-inspired with a floral design), and 100% of the profits go to Miss Major's organization, House of GG (The Griffin-Gracy Educational Retreat & Historical Center) in Little Rock, Arkansas. House of GG is a permanent home where Transgender people can come, feel safe, and be part of a growing network of Southern Trans people who are working for social justice.

In previous years all profits from that year were donated to:
